Charlie McCann’s second-half strike saw Forest Green Rovers end the season with a 1-0 victory over Notts County at The New Lawn.

Rovers came into this one following a 2-1 win away against Morecambe, with Notts County also getting three points after a 1-0 victory at home to Colchester.

The visitors had the first chance of the contest within 60 seconds, as a cross from Jodi Jones found Macaulay Langstaff, but his shot was deflected wide.

It was then a quiet 15 minute spell, before Notts County had a couple of opportunities to take the lead. Both came from Scott Robertson, and both were defended well by Rovers and diverted away from danger.

On 22 minutes, Jim O’Brien found himself through on goal and struck the ball with plenty of power, but Vicente Reyes positioned himself well and kept the scoreline level.

On the half-hour mark, a cross from Dan Crowley was met by the head of Kyle Cameron, but he could only find the side netting.

With 38 minutes played, Fankaty Dabo skipped past his man and delivered a cross, but there was no-one there to finish the move for Forest Green.

Shortly after, link-up play between a number of Magpies players led to Crowley letting fly from inside the area, but his effort sailed over the bar.

With the last kick of the half, Crowley had another go at goal, but saw this one go wide, and the teams went into the break with nothing to separate them.

Rovers had the first couple of chances of the second 45, with both Charlie McCann and Jordan Garrick getting shots away, but seeing them blocked.

It was a similar story for Langstaff who saw Jordan Moore-Taylor get in the way of his close-range strike, allowing Reyes to comfortably claim.

Langstaff was again involved in the action, working his way inside and laying the ball off for Jones to hit, but it was always rising and never troubling Reyes.

On the hour, Forest Green came close to opening the scoring. After a flurry in the box, the ball eventually came out to Harvey Bunker on the edge of the area. His effort took a slight deflection and flew just wide of Luca Ashby-Hammond’s post.

With 68 minutes gone, a poor kick from Ashby-Hammond went straight to Jamie Robson who shot with his left, but he couldn’t keep the strike down.

With just over 15 minutes to play, Forest Green Rovers took the lead. After his initial effort was saved by Ashby-Hammond, McCann was quickest to react and fired the ball into the top-right corner.

Rovers thought they had a second after Matty Stevens had the ball in the back of the net moments after coming on, but the referee pulled it back for a corner after the cross leading to the goal was deemed to have been deflected behind before re-entering the pitch.

Regardless, Forest Green managed to hold on and pick up all three points to end the campaign on a high.
